If you have been following Kingston Council announcements, you will have heard about the "new Kingston leisure centre" multiple times. It features in the budget speech, the corporate plan, and council press releases. What you will not have heard is where it will be, what it will look like, or when it will open.
What has actually been announced?
The council has confirmed the leisure centre as a "priority capital project" and allocated budget for it. Leader Cllr Andreas Kirsch lists it alongside council homes, family hubs, and green spaces as a key investment. But the specifics are remarkably thin for a project that is supposed to be a flagship.
The Kingfisher question
The current Kingfisher Leisure Centre on Fairfield Road has been a subject of redevelopment discussions for years. It is ageing, the facilities are dated, and it sits on a prime site close to Kingston town centre. Whether the new centre replaces Kingfisher on the same site or is built elsewhere will determine the disruption to existing users and the impact on the surrounding area.
No public consultation yet
For a major community facility, the absence of public consultation is notable. Residents have not been asked what they want in a new leisure centre, where they think it should go, or how they feel about the potential closure of Kingfisher during construction.
The cost question
New-build leisure centres in London typically cost £20-40 million. Kingston's capital programme is already stretched with housing commitments. How will this be funded? Through borrowing? Developer contributions? A combination? The financial details have not been published.
What to watch for
When a council makes grand announcements without specific plans, it usually means one of two things: the project is in genuine early stages, or it is being used for political messaging ahead of an election in May 2026. Residents should ask for a timeline with milestones and hold the council to it.
